Piano-Soleil is one of the 10 pieces under the title Six thèmes solaires. It was composed by Denis Gougeon in 1990 at the request of the Canadian Music Competition for the 1990 International Springboard event.
The objective of this case study was to portray a visual based on the music using different types of medium. The lines represent various tones and the ups and downs follow the rhythm. The concept was to draw the lines while listening to the music.
Each colour of line represents different meaning. Black is for the consistent sounds coming in from the beginning to the end. The blue and mauve are low-pitched sounds. As for the warm tone colours, they represent the climax and the intense moment.
The typeface choice synchronizes well with the concept. It also has the same thickness as the lines. The word “Soleil” is indented to create a feeling of tension from the chaotic orb. The positions of the lines and the text reflects the idea of Gougeon’s album about the solar system: everything gravitates around the orb.
The beginning was challenging. Interpreting music visually was not my forte, but after listening to the music infinite times I started to enjoy the process and even more the result. The second part of this project was to produce a vinyl record sleeve which was an interesting addition to the poster.
