Book cover & layout design, Print, Digital
Brian Eno is a British musician, composer, record producer, and visual artist who is well-known for being the pioneer of ambient music. The goal of this project is to design a cover, a book layout, and an app of the book.
Eno’s style is described as calm, ambient, contemporary, and free. He sees music as a sound in the background that can be as ignorable as it can be interesting. The book cover focuses on the serene and spacious feeling of his pieces by fragmenting the title and spacing it out.
In most of the pages, there is also a sense of the continuation of various sounds. It is reflected in an ongoing script of his interviews and on the cover, with his graphic score continuing on the front and back covers. In Eno’s work, there are sounds with an irregular rhythm. That arrhythmic sequence is reflected in the positioning of the facts, captions, and quotes.
The neutral tone colour palette creates a soothing tone visually. Touches of nature’s colour add the feeling of a background noise. Having a white space on top of the pages represents the airy sense in his melody.
This was a big project for one person, as the design of a whole book and an application were involved. Although challenging, it was exciting. It was a learning experience: making many design decisions and working with professionals such as a bookbinder and a photograph. Seeing the final physical result of the book was fulfilling.
